3 Skills to Foster
What are the 3 most important skills for an actor to foster?
One.
Self awareness
“You have to know yourself, so you can use yourself” - Heath Ledger
Two.
Deep work
“Who you are, what you love, what you think, feel, and do - is the sum total of what you focus on” - Cal Newport
Three.
Inner child
(A healthy integration of your inner child into your adult life)
It is the most valuable currency you have & it is what separates you from the rest
Celebration
Earlier this year
When the short film Lost Boy won St Kilda Film Festival
It became eligible for the Academy Awards
So in celebration of Lost Boy finally being sent off to the Oscars last week
Pete Skinner (director, editor, writer) and I were interviewed on The Orlando Norman Show
Many topics discussed, including:
The relationship between actor and director
Important skills for directors and actors to foster
Allowing life to influence work
Building honest professional relationships

Craft
I’m going to do something I haven’t done in a decade
Coach the craft of acting
I have always treated the work in-between “Action” and “Cut” with an air of sacredness
I kept those cards close to my chest
In fact, I have spent the last 6 years coaching everything about being an actor except for the specifics of what happens during a take
However
I’ve been fortunate to have been mentored by some extraordinarily generous coaches
People who helped my hero’s give meaningful takes
And it’s about time I started passing on those lessons
The specifics
The work that helps an actor give their best on cue
So…
If you have an audition or job to prepare for
And want to give more meaningful takes
