START AGAIN MONDAY
1/3/21
Welcome to Start Again Mondays
Alrighty…start again
Something I’m Pondering
I was driving a delivery truck for 10 and a half hours in the middle of the night last week
So I devoured a few podcasts
(As well as listening to Questions by Middle Kids about 80 times in a row)
One conversation in particular stood out to me, between Kevin Rose and Tim Ferris
They were breaking down an old quote
“What would you do if you knew you could not fail”
I laughed
I use to have a coffee mug with that quote on it
I was surprised to hear Kevin and Tim discussing the “stupidity” of this quote
I leant in
They were suggesting it was delusional to ignore all the failure, pain and suffering ahead
That suffering was the guarantee
Regardless of ones chosen path
They suggested remixing the wording a bit
To something a bit more healthy
So this is a question I’ve been trying to answer in the last few days…
“What would you do even if you knew you would fail?”
Mmm
Pursue the craft of acting?
Give that audition everything?
Work on my relationship with that loved one?
Have that honest conversation?
Build a business?
Mentor others?
Volunteer?
Go dancing?
Sing in front of someone?
Ride horses?
Do martial arts?
Mmm
A provoking question
What is really worth my time and energy, even if I “fail” at it?
Curious
Quote I’m Considering
“Amateurs do what they love, professionals love what they do”
- Seth Godin
I love this quote
I love how it takes ones’ initial enthusiasms and gives it a focus on process
For me, this quote encapsulates the transition from hunting happiness to pursuing fulfilment
That whatever path I am choosing
Regardless of how much I love it
At some point its going to suck
So I have a responsibility to try make the process as fulfilling as possible
Regardless of the result
